A brave heart beats slow: Breath-work exercise for confidence

There’s a thunderstorm crashing outside and my boyfriend’s dog is hysterical. I’ve never seen her like this. She’s never cuddly with me, so it’s a surprise when she rests her head on my heart. Suddenly she’s calm. She falls asleep on my chest while the storm rages on. My slow heartbeat has calmed hers.

Davidji introduced me to the idea of a ‘Pattern Interrupt’, a simple technique that slows the breathing, the heart rate and a racing mind - in seconds. It’s easy as pie and I call on it weekly. Here it is:

1. Breathe in for 4 counts

2. Hold that breath for 4 counts

3. Exhale for 4 counts

4. Hold for 4 counts

4-4-4-4

Next time you’re in Fear City, just as my slow beats calmed Tilly-Dog’s fears, let your heart calm your head - literally.

Just Breathe.

Your Friend,

Buzzy
